A specialism: construction

Where I started: on site

I worked on site as a civil engineer, so for contractors I bring more than the software. I know the paperwork that keeps a site legal and gets the firm paid, and I move it off paper and onto the phone in the site manager's pocket.

Site diary

The diary arrives on Friday, written from memory.

Filled in on the phone the same day, with photos, labour and weather, and filed under the job.

Plant inspections

LOLER and PUWER dates live in a spreadsheet, or in one person's head.

A register that warns you before anything expires and keeps the certificate with the machine.

Cards and training

CSCS cards and tickets checked at the gate, if someone remembers.

Every operative's cards and training in one place, with a warning weeks before one runs out.

RAMS and permits

RAMS signed on paper, permits to work in a ring binder in the cabin.

Briefed and signed on a phone, with a record of who read which version, and when.

Timesheets and dayworks

Hours retyped from paper into payroll; dayworks argued about a month later.

Why an engineer

An engineer's way of building software.

I studied civil engineering to master's level and worked on site before I moved into software. It shaped how I build: I start from how the work is actually done, who fills the form in and where they are standing when they do it, and what an auditor or a client will ask to see.

Since then I have spent eight years building Microsoft Power Platform systems for companies such as Bosch, Volkswagen and Lonza. Every tool I build for a smaller firm gets the same care: documented, tested and handed over properly.

What the engineering changes

  • The data follows the work. I map how the work really runs, by order, by machine, by job, by person, before I design a screen. On a construction job that means reading the drawings, the programme and the bill of quantities.
  • Records ready to be shown. Built for the audit as much as for the user, whether the questions come from an ISO auditor, a client or a regulator. For a contractor that means the records CDM 2015, LOLER and PUWER ask a firm to keep.
  • Built for the person doing the job. Big buttons, few fields, a photo instead of a paragraph. If a form takes longer than the job it records, it will not be filled in.
  • Built to outlast the person who asked for it. Clear names, written notes and no hidden dependencies, so a tool keeps working when people change, including me.
